Sony is officially adopting a program similar to EA Games’ Online Pass, which forces gamers to use a one-time-use activation code (contained in a game’s packaging) to enable the multiplayer portion of said game. Sony’s version, simply called PSN Pass, will make its debut with Resistance 3 in September.
The PSN Pass was first spotted by German website Konsolentreff, who noticed a strange sticker on the forthcoming Resistance 3 boxed bundles (pictured below in full). Since that sighting, which has spread like wildfire across the internet, Sony has made it official, issuing a statement explaining the intentions of the PSN Pass.
"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," said Sony’s spokesperson. "This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.
"This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

People who buy Resistance 3 used now run the risk of snagging a copy that doesn’t include a PSN Pass, meaning they will have to fork over extra cash through the PS Store in order to activate the online portion of the product. This in turn means that these costumers could potentially be spending more money overall on a used game plus its individual PSN Pass. Therefore, they might as well just buy the game new where all of the profit goes to Sony, not GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, etc.
