Ray Stevenson Cast in the Newly Retitled ‘G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes’

The co-star of this summer's Thor to play the villainous Firefly in Jon M. Chu's upcoming G.I. Joe sequel.

Ray Stevenson may have had a breakout role in HBO's hit series Rome, but after his starring debut in Punisher War Zone (which sucked but wasn't Ray Stevenson's fault – he was actually great casting) he's been relegated to big roles in small films like Kill the Irishman and small roles in big films like Thor and Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming Three Musketeers remake. Now Stevenson's hardened looks and surprisingly charming personality are going to grace yet another high-profile project: G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes, the newly renamed sequel to Stephen Sommers's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra from Step Up 3D director Jon M. Chu.

Hollywood Reporter reports, as is its want, that Stevenson has been cast as Firefly, a demolitions expert and (naturally) ninja. The mysterious character was, according to the popular Marvel comic book series from writer Larry Hama, largely responsible for the death of Snake Eyes's master. Having been hired to kill Snake Eyes by Cobra Commander himself, Firefly discovered that he was no match for G.I. Joe's own personal ninja and hired the master of disguise Zartan to finish the job. When Zartan killed Snake Eyes' master by mistake, Storm Shadow (Cobra's #1 ninja) chased after him, but his immediate departure led Snake Eyes to assume that Storm Shadow was the actual culprit. So yeah, Firefly is responsible for a lot of crap.

Given the almost entirely new cast – including Snake Eyes' and Storm Shadow's master, whose death we saw in the previous film – it's looking more and more like Jon M. Chu's film will have little to do with Stephen Sommers's just plain bad original film. We couldn't be happier. Stevenson joins The Rise of Cobra's only returning cast member Channing Tatum along with fresh blood Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki in the cast of G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes, which we assume will not be about a villainous labor dispute.
