Since 2008, Microsoft has hosted the Xbox Live “Summer of Arcade.” This program puts the spotlight on smaller, downloadable games released on the Xbox Live Arcade platform over a month’s period in the middle of the gaming industry’s summer drought. Since its inception, the Summer of Arcade has been a runaway success, acting as the launching pad for classics such as Braid, Limbo, and this summer’s hit, Bastion. Now, Sony is getting in on the action, announcing their own version of the Summer of Arcade, called “PSN Play.”

Starting on August 23, Sony will release one PSN game per week for four weeks as part of their PSN Play incentive program. Gamers who purchase all four titles will be granted a 5th downloadable title for free. And as a bonus perk for being a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll be able to purchase these games at a 20% discount.

The PSN Play release schedule is as follows, with each title offering up a unique incentive to get you to buy it during this promotion.

August 23 – Street Fighter 3rd Strike Online Edition (Unlock Gill without beating the game with each character)

August 30 – Deathspank: The Baconing (Receive Roesha as a bonus co-op character)

September 6 – BloodRayne: Betrayal (Get a virtual item for PS Home and a dynamic theme)

September 13 – Renegade Ops (Free vehicle and character pack)

If you buy all four titles listed ($14.99 each), you’ll get Payday: The Heist for free when it launches on September 20th (the game will cost $19.99 standalone).
