Marvel Shopping Around Avengers Game

Who will develop a game about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

When there’s a major summer blockbuster film, there’s usually always a video game tie-in trailing closely behind. And I don’t think I have to go into nauseating detail about the track record these tie-ins usually have. In short: they usually aren’t very good. Yet, Film studios, game publishers and developers still pursue them because they’re easy money in the bank, whether the product is good, bad or terrible.

The latest example here is Marvel, who is shopping around the Avengers IP to gaming publishers and developers. As you’re probably aware, Marvel Studios is pumping out the Avengers flick next summer and they need a video game tie-in. That’s why they’re going door to door (OK, that’s probably an exaggeration) to find the perfect partner to make this tie-in game a reality.

Previously, THQ held the rights to develop an Avengers tie-in title, but the project was scrapped when THQ decided to cull the “weak” of their studio earlier this year, canning future MX vs. ATV, de Blob, and Red Faction titles. The Avengers was a casualty of that decision as well. Now the rights to the property have reverted back to Marvel, the company announced in an official statement to GameSpot.

So who will pick up the Avengers and carry the torch home? Your guess is as good as mine, honestly. What I do know is that whoever decides to develop the game will have an incredibly short time frame if they want to push the title out by the time the film releases.

Oh, and if you want to see some pre-alpha footage of THQ’s Avengers title that will never be, check out the video below.
