Today, Sony revealed a completely overhauled way to search and discover movies and television shows through the PlayStation Network. Everybody say hi to Video Unlimited Preview.

At this point in time, Sony has amassed over 40,000 movies and television programs on the PlayStation Store for rent and purchase. But with how cumbersome the PS Store is to navigate, it can be quite a pain in the ass to find the exact movie/TV show you were interested in watching. Sony’s plan with Video Unlimited Preview is to remove that frustration and make it easy to find exactly what you want to watch, as well as introduce intuitive search keywords to help viewers stumble across programs they might not know about, but would wind up enjoying nonetheless. Think of it as digital entertainment “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.”

To see what I’m talking about, you can watch a sneak peak of Video Unlimited Preview with the below video.

As of right now, Video Unlimited Preview is a free download only for PlayStation Plus subscribers in North America and Canada. However, the application will be made available to all PlayStation Network users for free on October 11, 2011.

This is a definite step in the right direction for streamlining the layout of the PlayStation Store. Hopefully Video Unlimited Preview will be a huge success for Sony and will lead them to updating their gaming storefront with a similar layout in the future. Fingers crossed.
