Face palm indeed, Isaac. Face palm indeed...

Kotaku is busy churning the rumor mill this morning. The site is reporting on a pair of rumors for two of EA’s biggest franchises — Dead Space and Dragon Age. Both news ideas could turn out to be hearsay, but they’re interesting (and slightly disturbing), so I figured I’d share.

Firstly, let’s talk Dead Space. It’s being reported that EA is looking to expand the IP into some new frontiers. The publisher is apparently looking to create a first-person shooter title set in the Dead Space universe, as well as a spaceship combat game. Furthermore, EA is looking into Dead Space going the Indiana Jones route with an action-adventure title being labeled as “Uncharted in Space.” Because that turned out so well for Dino Crisis

In regards to Dragon Age, we could be seeing BioWare’s fantasy series adopting multiplayer, as most major IPs tend to do these days, for better or worse. Hell, Mass Effect has joined the party, and it’s like totally the cool kid at school. So why wouldn’t Dragon Age want to follow suit.

Kotaku’s source was unable to specify if Dragon Age multiplayer will come packaged with the inevitable Dragon Age 3, or if it will be a standalone, downloadable title. But no matter how it gets served up, you can expect player vs. environment (PvE), player vs. player (PvP) and playable dragon action. This multiplayer component is also apparently running on EA’s Frostbite 2 engine, the same graphics engine that powers the beautiful Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run.

So, Dead Space may be expanding into some weird territories and Dragon Age may be getting multiplayer. We can’t say we’re shocked by this turn of events, but we are a little concerned. Milking franchises and introducing unnecessary components are two of our biggest pet peeves with the gaming industry. Looks like EA is doing both here if these rumors turn out to be true.

But if this pair of rumors gets debunked or confirmed, we’ll be back to update the post.
