As we reported yesterday in our sneak preview of this, well, preview, the trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation kicks ass. Now, you can see for yourself because it's just premiered exclusively from Machinima. Take a gander below and come back afterwards for our thoughts!
THE GOOD: Just about everything. Channing Tatum is back but in a limited capacity, and the scars on his face imply a toughened G.I. Joe sequel with genuine consequences. The plot appears pretty standard, and in fact rather similar to Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, with the elite team framed for acts of villainy and acting outside the system to save the day, Snake Eyes doesn't have lips anymore (thank you), and Cobra Commander finally looks right. The broader strokes of the action, from the ridiculous mountain climbing sword fight to the redecorated White House are 100% fine with us. This is the Cobra we always wanted to see, and while we don't want our G.I. Joe movies to be outright stupid, we mean, so stupid we have to write an article about it twice, over the top is totally fine with us as long as someone with half a brain is behind it all. Jon Chu appears to be our guy. Oh, and it looks like Bruce Willis will have a fun cameo, and not a needlessly distracting one like Brendan Fraser's in the first film.
THE BAD: Well, not so much bad as disconcerting... G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a direct sequel to the first, really very bad film. Zartan is still the president, for example. While it appears that they're using the first movie as a vague set up for new awesomeness, if they really feel the need to adhere to the original it might mean that this is just a very good trailer for another, potentially very bad film.
Either way, we're encouraged. What do you think?
