Update 2: Ubisoft has confirmed on Facebook recent rumors that Assassin's Creed III will take place during the American Revolutionary War. The company even released the game's official box art, which is pasted below for your enjoyment. Our assessment: best AC box art yet.
Update 1: Whoops. It seems a hub banner fired off too soon on Game Informer's website (since removed), providing further proof that the next Assassin's Creed game is indeed set during the American War of Independence. You can head over to website Toastervision to check out a screengab they quickly captured, showing off our Native American assassin pointing George Washington across the Delaware.
Original Story: It's looking like the third numerical installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise will take place during the American Revolution, if a leaked promo image from Best Buy is to be believed.
Kotaku was sent a pair of images from an anonymous Best Buy employee, the first stating that Assassin's Creed III will be fully revealed on March 5th and that there will be pre-order bonuses. But that's the less interesting image. The second, pasted below, is apparently a promo piece of art for the title that shows off the game's titular character: a Native American assassin during the American Revolution, complete with cow-skin boots, a tomahawk, and a bow with arrows.
In a word, it's badass.
At this moment in time, this promo art is technically unofficial. It will remain that way until Ubisoft lets us know one way or the other. But until then, ogle over its badass beauty.
We'll be back with more Assassin's Creed III news when it creeps up and scalps us.
