Talk show host extraordinaire Oprah Winfrey is appearing in Toronto today for her special lecture Lifeclass, in which she and other inspirational speakers will share life lessons they've learned through the course of their lives and careers.
Fans began congregating as early as 5am this morning as Torontonians prepared for Winfrey's arrival. Her guest speakers include Deepak Chopra, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Tony Robbins, and Iyanla Vanzant, a self-help author. The day's events will be aired on the OWN network this evening as part of the new series "Oprah's Lifeclass: The Tour."
The event is taking place at Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and both the morning and afternoon shows sold out in just minutes. As CTV pointed out, individual tickets for the "Lifeclass" in Toronto were priced as high as $1,000 on Craigslist as of Monday morning, and others were selling pairs of tickets for $600 on Kijiji, another online marketplace. The OWN network has been experiencing some mediocre ratings, and those who planned the Oprah tour are hoping to curb this unfortunate trend. "We're not getting the initial return on that investment that we had hoped for but we continue to be optimistic about that," said John Cassaday, CEO of Corus Entertainment, which runs OWN Canada, to CTV. Cassaday told CP that he also believes it's going to take some time for the network to catch on with audiences north of the border.
"Oprah's Lifeclass: The Tour" kicked off in St. Louis, Missouri on March 26th.
