Brad Peyton Will Direct ‘Lobo’

The director of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is all set to take on DC's most violent superhero.

The Flash. Wonder Woman. Birds of Prey. Teen Titans. Shazam. Aquaman. What do they have in common? None of these DC heroes have a movie in active development, and nor do they currently have a director attached. Instead, Warner Bros. has given the ultraviolent intergalactic alien biker bounty hunter Lobo the thumbs up, attaching Brad Peyton to rewrite and direct an upcoming motion picture about his adventures. Weird, huh?

Lobo was created by Kieth Giffen and Roger Slifer as an "indictment" of violent superheroes, like Wolverine and The Punisher, but ironically became one of the most popular characters in that very mold. The Czarnian experienced a popularity surge in the 1990s and remains a popular comic book mainstay right through to the present. He's set to make his first appearance in the new "52" continuity in the 9th issue of Deathstroke, due on May 9.

Deadline's report that Brad Feyton will direct the film is a curious one, as his previous experience has been on films like Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and this year's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which probably means that Dwayne Johnson is destined to be rumored to star in the project. The last time DC went to a family film director for their edgy comic book properties, Jimmy Hayward, the director of Horton Hears a Who, wound up directing Jonah Hex, one of the worst comic book movies in years, and arguably one of the worst of all time. The film was also a box office bomb, earning back less than $11 million of its reported $47 million budget.

Surely Peyton is aware of the pressures placed on him to do Lobo correctly, especially since many other top flight DC Comics characters are still waiting patiently for their shot at the big screen. It's enough to be concerned about, but we'll wait for more information before we start worrying about it.
