Saturday was a special day in baseball, as White Sox hurler Phil Humber threw just the 21st perfect game in major league history -- shutting out the Mariners in Seattle four to nothing. Humber's first full season in the big's was just last year and Saturday also marked the first complete game for the pitcher. The last perfecto was by Roy Halladay against the Marlins on May 29 of 2010. The White Sox also had a perfect game from Mark Buehrle in 2009. The Mets and the Padres are the only two franchises without a single no-hitter to their credit……I even have a no-hitter to my name…..for the Arthur Knights….against the Atwood-Hammond Rajahs…in a high school JV game…it was only 3 innings.
After 38 years of coaching at Tennessee and winning more games than anyone in college basketball, Pat Summitt finally stepped aside this past week. Only 59 years old, Summitt steps away due to her dementia-Alzheimer's type that has been affecting her within the past year. Although she passes on the reigns to long-time assistant Holly Warlick, Summitt will still work with the team on a part-time basis with the title of head coach emeritus, and due to her inspirational work, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, later this year in Washington from President Obama -- which is one more presidential medal than most of us can claim…..
And you can count the number of games left on the NBA schedule for each team on one hand. That's right, it's almost playoff time, and if the shortened season didn't provide enough drama, I'll update you on some shockers. Although it seems Tim Duncan and co. are all around 50 years-old, the ageless Spurs have won 7 in a row and are now currently the number one seed in the west, Dwight Howard underwent back surgery and is now done for the rest of the season and will even miss the Summer Olympics, The Bulls have been without Derrick Rose due to injury, the Heat have been without Dwayne Wade…..due to, you guessed it…injury…. and we're waiting word to see how long Metta World Peace will be suspended after he threw an elbow to James Harden's head after a dunk during the Lakers dramatic comeback win over the Thunder on Sunday, giving Harden a concussion. Even though he apologized and said it was 'unfortunate' and 'unintentional,' World Peace could miss serious playoff time, which could hurt the Laker's defensively during the post-season. As of right now the Thunder would be the two seed and Lakers three in the West, while in the East the top three, in order, would be Chicago, Miami, Indiana……
And someone break up the Bronx bombers…. Curtis Granderson had a three- home run game agains the Twins on Thursday. On Friday, Alex Rodriguez hit his 631st career home run, moving past Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth all-time. And on Saturday, the Yankees blasted 15 runs, coming back from being down nine-nothing to the Red Sox. The Yanks have the best on base percentage in the majors so far this year at .367. Personally, I have one career home run to my credit… in a Tuscaloosa, Alabama co-ed softball league…..it got called off because it was past the 2-home run rule limit……I'm still bitter…..now it's time to call off this show for today…..
That's all the sports news you need to know for this week. You know where you can find me next Monday. Thanks for watching your Sports Fix.
