Years ago, "Southland" was rescued by TNT after being unceremoniously canceled by NBC. Since that time, "Southland" has gone on to become one of the most popular series on TNT.
Thus it was unsurprising when TNT finally announced that "Southland" has been renewed a fifth season of ten episodes. The only thing unexpected about the announcement was that it took so long to be made.
"Southland" stars Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie as police officers and detectives who struggle to deal with the mean streets of Los Angeles and their own treacherous inner demons. The fourth season included an impressive guest cast including Lou Diamond Phillips, Carl Lumbly, Lisa Gay Hamilton, C. Thomas Howell, Marla Gibbs and Tracey Walter.
However, the most memorable new character on the series was Lucy Liu's Officer Jessica Tang; who among other things, covered up the fact that she shot a kid with a toy gun by removing the orange safety top on her way to an eventual promotion. Liu was recently cast as Dr. Joan Watson on the Sherlock Holmes inspired CBS pilot, "Elementary," which seems likely to go forward and preclude her return to "Southland" next season.
The fifth season of "Southland" will kick off in February 2013.
