Martial arts based TV dramas enjoyed a cult following in the '70s and '80s before they largely fell by the wayside. However, the genre may soon have a comeback courtesy of FX.

According to Deadline, FX is developing "Downtown Dragons," a potential new drama series in New York's Chinatown that follows "rival gangsters who must rely upon traditional fighting techniques to maintain their territories after the triad bosses ban all firearms in the area following a bloody shootout." Despite the somewhat anachronistic premise, "Downtown Dragons" will be set in the present.

"Downtown Dragons" was created by S. Craig Zahler, who will write the pilot script and executive produce the potential series. Zahler has previously written a western novel called "A Congregation of Jackals" and he currently has two screenplays in development: The Big Stone Grid with Michael Mann and Michael DeLuca attached to produce at Sony and The Brigands Of Rattleborge, a "dark western" that had previously placed on the prestigious Hollywood Black List. The Brigands Of Rattleborge was originally being developed at Warner Bros. before it was recently acquired by Red Granite and Mythology.
