Maclean’s names restaurant of the year

New restaurant of the year and chef of the year also announced.

In a special edition of Maclean's magazine, a number of go-to eateries and gourmands are being touted from across the country, and several have been disclosed prior to the publication of the issue.

The restaurant of the year has been awarded to Hawksworth at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, which is headed by Chef David Hawksworth. Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with in-bar dining menus and its own private room, Hawksworth delivers an array of dining experiences from power breakfasts to after-work drinks to formal gala events.

The new restaurant of the year goes to The Grove in Toronto, which opened earlier this year and has been met with praise from the city's top restaurant critics. And the chef of the year has been bestowed upon Normand Laprise, the culinary force behind Montreal's renowned Toqué.

This summer, Maclean's food columnist Jacob Richler assembled a team of food critics across the country to find the country’s 50 best restaurants, and the result was the first-ever Maclean’s restaurant issue, which will give readers what they have never had before: a comprehensive but highly selective catalogue of the best restaurants in Canada, old and new, casual and formal, pricey and inexpensive, united in quality.
