Martin Sheen Will Return in Amazing Spider-Man 2

Is it a flashback or something more unexpected?

Uncle Ben was Norman Osborn this whole time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Why else would he be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 2Because he's coming back, and even Martin Sheen doesn't know what's in store for the character.

"Well they called me back," Sheen told The Late Late Show (via Coming Soon). "I don't know what the part's going to be but I'm going to be Uncle Ben once again in Spider-Man next year. We shoot in February."

Cliff Robertson, who played the ill-fated Uncle Ben Parker in Sam Raimi's version of Spider-Man, reprised the character in two sequels, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, despite the character's famous demise. He once in a dream sequence and once in flashback. Joking aside, Martin Sheen seems likely to come back in a similar capacity. Perhaps Peter Parker will finally catch up with his Uncle's murderer, a street thug with a star tattoo and fashion sense straight out of a Nickelback music video.

And maybe, just maybe, he'll finally get to say "With great power comes great responsibility," like he forgot to in The Amazing Spider-Man. But we doubt it. Marc Webb's movies seem intent on forging their own identity, separate from the Sam Raimi movies, even though – by bringing Uncle Ben back – they're clearly not against doing the exact same thing.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2, 2014.
