"Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!"
Hot on the heels of new trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel, The Lone Ranger and G.I. Joe: Retaliation comes this, our first good look at Guillerm Del Toro's Pacific Rim, an original sci-fi epic about a future in which humanity staves off invasion by giant intergalactic monsters using giant robots called "Jaegers." The film stars Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy"), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Idris Elba ("Luther") and, most excitingly, Ellen McLain, doing her GLaDOS voice from the video games Portal and Portal 2.
Unlike the other major trailers premiering this month, each making their own attempt to entice audiences for the 2013 blockbuster season, Pacific Rim isn't based on an existing pop culture property, so our commentary is a little thin beyond "that looks totally awesome" and "doesn't this look an awful lot like a live-action Neon Geneis Evangelion?" The embedded trailer comes courtesy of Coming Soon (where you can also see the film's new poster), and you can download it for yourself in high definition at iTunes.
Pacific Rim rocket punches into theaters on July 12, 2013.
