Audiences were first introduced to Vin Diesel in Saving Private Ryan and The Iron Giant, he didn't become "Vin Diesel" until the low-budget 2000 sci-fi flick Pitch Black. The film was a dandy piece of entertainment, telling the story of a group of marooned space travelers fighting off a horde of nocturnal monsters on a distant planet, but it was the character of Riddick that made the film such a memorable success. Vin Diesel's antihero was an unrepentant homicidal criminal forced into a position of unlikely heroism as the only person capable of saving the cast from the alien threat, and the role was so very memorable that Diesel's stardom was secured. Even though the first sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, kinda sucked, we've all been looking forward to Riddick's next movie, particularly since director David Twohy promised a sequel more in keeping with Pitch Black's memorable grittiness. Now, we finally know when we're going to see it: September 6, 2013.
What's more, the new movie – entitled simply Riddick – will also be screened in IMAX (via Coming Soon), even though it wasn't actually filmed in 70mm so the extra money spent on those tickets will be relatively wasted. But some folks just like the bigger screen, so they'll have the option of seeing Riddick in IMAX theaters if they want to. The September release date seems to imply that Universal Pictures doesn't have much faith in the film as a major tentpole release, but that could be a good thing. The larger scope of Chronicles of Riddick didn't do the film any favors, so the fact that it feels like a September release could be seen as a confirmation that Riddick will indeed follow Pitch Black's suit as a down to earth science ficton action film.
For those who don't remember, the plot synopsis for Riddick was supplied back in February of this year:
"The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy."
Riddick co-stars Katee Sackhoff, Karl Urban and Dave Bautista, and will follow the release of the next Vin Diesel franchise installment, Fast Six, which hits theaters on May 24, 2013.
