With the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot expected to head before cameras next month, the last remaining lead character has finally been cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chloe Bennet has been cast in the pivotal role of Skye, a young woman who is described as someone who is “slightly obsessed with superhero culture and the shadow organizations that exist within it. She's edgy and can out-talk anyone with her unflappable nature.”
Intriguingly, the description seems to indicate that Skye is not initially a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. (aka Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics). Presumably Skye’s character arc will bring her into the organization fairly quickly or find some other way to integrate her with the action.
Prior to being cast as Skye, Bennet was best known as a pop singer in China (as Chloe Wang) and for her recurring role on the ABC soap, “Nashville.”
Bennet is joined in the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot by Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons, Ian De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Ming-Na as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward and Clark Gregg reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson from the various Marvel movies.
Joss Whedon is set to direct the pilot episode of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” in addition to co-writing the script with his brother, Jed and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen. “S.H.I.E.L.D.” is also considered to be a very strong contender to make ABC’s Fall 2013 TV schedule.
