Syfy’s upcoming return to the sci-fi genre in “Defiance” has been eagerly awaited for over a year. And now the network has finally set a date for the series premiere.

“Defiance” will make its debut on Monday, April 15 at 9pm. “Warehouse 13” — one of Syfy’s veteran genre series —  will also resume its fourth season in April, potentially indicating that both shows will be paired together as part of Syfy’s “Powerful Mondays” lineup.

Developed by “Farscape” creator Rockne S. O'Bannon and Trion Worlds, “Defiance” takes place on Earth in the aftermath of a devastating war that dramatically changed the planet when a collective of seven alien races attempted to terraform our world for their survival.

In the fragile peace that emerges, the city formerly known as St. Louis has been renamed “Defiance” as it experiences a painful rebirth as a mining town where people of all species attempt to co-exist.

Grant Bowler stars as Jeb Nolan, the chief Lawkeeper of the small town of Defiance, along with Stephanie Leonidas as his adopted alien daughter, Irisa. “Dexter” veterans Julie Benz (pictured above) portrays Amanda Rosewater, the Mayor of Defiance while Jaime Murray will play Stahma Tarr, an alien woman with high ambitions for herself and her husband Datak Tarr (Tony Curran).

Entertainment Weekly has posted a new exclusive trailer for “Defiance,” which seems to be going for a tone somewhere between “Hell on Wheels” and the cult classic Joss Whedon series, “Firefly.” “Defiance” may not be a space western, but it’s definitely riffing on the western motif.
