Back in November, the “Arrow” creative team revealed their plans to take the Green Arrow villain, Count Vertigo and re-envision the character as someone “scary and nightmarish” who will become “Oliver’s deadliest adversary to date.”

Stepping into the role of The Count will be Seth Gabel, who most recently co-starred on “Fringe” as Lincoln Lee. TV Guide has posed the first picture of Gabel as The Count alongside an interview in which “Arrow” executive producer, Marc Guggenheim explains how the new version of the character intersects with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

"What gets Oliver into The Count's orbit and puts the two of them in conflict is actually a really personal motivation," noted Guggenheim. "Someone close to him is actually hurt by The Count. This is the first time the Arrow goes after someone purely out of revenge. There's argument to be made that the Arrow's general mission is one of vengeance, but this is very specific. This time, it's personal."
The story notes that The Count is behind a new street drug called Vertigo; which adversely affects Oliver’s sister, Thea (Willa Holland). While The Count’s comic book counterpart isn’t always portrayed as a formidable opponent, that won’t be the case with his TV incarnation.

"He's a very interesting character, and the way Seth performs him, he plays him with a lot of flair," said Guggenheim. "The fun thing about The Count is he's actually a businessman. He's got a little bit of a sociopathic streak in him, for sure, but he sees himself as an entrepreneur, as creating not drugs, but art. He compares his drug to performing a social service and to a fine wine, so he has a very skewed view of what it is that he does. At the same time, we know that he's not only sociopathic, but he's very sadistic as well."

Gabel will appear as The Count in several episodes later this season. New episodes of “Arrow” begin tonight on the CW.
