David Hussey Left Off Australia’s ODI Team

Is this the end of David Hussey's international career?

Veteran batsman David Hussey has been left off Australia’s One Day International squad to take on the West Indies on February 1 and 3.

Hussey makes way for another Victorian in Aaron Finch, who has been recalled after failing to leave an impression during a short stint with ODI team earlier this month.  Finch managed just a combined 20 runs in two innings for Australia, the reason he lost his spot on the squad, but was rewarded with a promotion after being honoured as the best player from the recently concluded Big Bash League.

Hussey was marvellous in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka producing a total of 60, but was inconsistent thereafter registering a 34, 1, 4, 29. Average form and poor team batting totals against the Sri Lankans means the 35-year-old Hussey should be extremely anxious about his job security. A lot of things will have to go his way if he is to make the 2015 World Cup team.

Chairman of selectors John Inverarity defended his choices on Friday.

“A top four of (David) Warner, Finch, (Phil) Hughes and Clarke has good balance and the team looks forward to getting better starts than has been the case recently,” Inverarity said on Friday.

“David Hussey has been dropped from the squad as the (selectors) keeps a constant eye on the future.

Captain Michael Clarke will return to side after missing Wednesday’s game five against Sri Lanka with an ankle injury sustained at training.

“Michael Clarke is making steady progress with the ankle he injured on 22 January and we are confident that Michael will recover in time to be fit for the first of the ODI fixtures against the West Indies on 1 February,” Inverarity said.

Australian team: Michael Clarke (c), George Bailey, Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, Aaron Finch, Moises Henriques, Phil Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
