Well, this is a surprise. In addition to Electro, Harry Osborn and Mary-Jane Watson (and Morbius the Living Vampire), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has decided to add yet another prominent character to its already large ensemble. The Rhino is going to be the second villain menacing the webslinger on May 2, 2014, and it looks like he'll be played by famed muscleman Paul Giamatti.

Uh… Wait, what?

Giamatti, the acclaimed star of Sideways and American Splendor (with an Oscar-nominated supporting turn in Ron Howard's Cinderella Man), looks all set to play the giant, super-strong villain The Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and we couldn't be happier about it. Although generally played as a giant bodybuilding monster of a guy, earlier interpretations of The Rhino found the character to be actually rather ordinary-looking, larger than most but clearly the bearer of no six-pack. Trapped in his indestructible Rhino suit and none too happy about it, the villain often took out his aggressions on Spider-Man. Giamatti is a great actor for that particular role, as he is famous for portraying characters dealing with issues of depression and sudden rage. Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, also notes that on multiple occasions Giamatti has already expressed his love for the character in multiple outlets and interviews.

The article also noted that rising star Felicity Jones, whose latest film Breathe In premiered at last week's Sundance Film Festival, is in talks for an as-yet unspecified role. She could be playing a major character in the Spider-Man franchise (she'd certainly be a great Black Cat, wouldn't she?), but at this point it's equally likely that she's playing a new character with perhaps a supporting role in the lives of the film's villans, the Rhino or Electro, who is set to be played by Jamie Foxx. Then again maybe she's playing Groo the Wanderer for all we know. We're not kidding. We don't have a clue who she's going to be playing yet. Stop asking!

Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, guys. What do you think?
