It's been over ten years since the last theatrically released Hercules movie, and now there's two of them. When it rains it pours, and when it pours, it apparently pours on giant pectoral muscles.
Renny Harlin, the director who brought you the hit films Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger (and the mega-flop Cutthroat Island), has thrown his loin cloth into the ring with Hercules 3D, a $70 million sword-and-sandal epic from Millennium Films. According to Hollywood Reporter, production gearing up quickly, with casting expected in the next two months, and an expected release date in March 2014.
For those of you paying attention, that would give Hercules 3D a five-month headstart on Brett Ratner's Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson, set to release on August 8, 2014. And thus, once again, we have a Dante's Peak/Volcano fight. Or possibly a Deep Impact/Armageddon showdown. Or a Bug's Life/Antz kerfuffle. Or a Despicable Me/Megamind hullabaloo. You see where we're going with this. Once again two very similar films are competing at the box office in the same calendar year. Should Brett Ratner be worried? Perhaps not, since the odds of Harlin finding a bigger star than Dwayne Johnson with the body necessary to convincingly play Hercules are pretty slim. That, and Renny Harlin hasn't directed a big hit movie since 1999's super-smart Mako shark thriller Deep Blue Sea.
But which movie will show Hercules throwing a bear into deep space? These are the questions WE want answered, and answered immediately.
