Some of the folks who recently left developer People Can Fly (Painkiller, Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgment) are hard at work on a new game called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter at their new indie development studio, The Astronauts. With a studio name like that, they are clearly aiming high.

Case and point: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is said to be a “weird fiction horror” game slated for PC, via digital distribution, dropping in 2013. It takes further inspiration from other “tales of macabre of the early 20th century.” According to the game’s reveal press release, it’s to be played at night, alone, and with headphones on. It’s nice to see some developers embracing true horror when series like Resident Evil and Dead Space continue to shy away from it and towards a more action-heavy approach.

Here’s the game’s debut trailer. The video was done using the in-game engine, which is Unreal Engine 3 for those curious.

Burning a teddy bear. Dark.

Instead of just paraphrasing the plot synopsis from the press release, I’m going to paste it in full:

“As a detective with the supernatural ability to visualize scenes of lethal crimes, you investigate the kidnapping of a young boy, hoping to save him before it’s too late. The investigation leads you to a beautiful mountain area, where you come across a severely mutilated body of one of the kidnappers. Using both your paranormal skill and modern detective tools you discover the mystery behind the trail of corpses in the valley, the roots of an ancient force ruling the area, and the fate of the kidnapped boy.”

Sounds like a winner to us. We’ll be back with more on The Vanishing of Ethan Carter when we hear it. Stay tuned.
