Star Wars 1313 Isn’t Canceled, It’s Just ‘Halted’

Welcome to purgatory; enjoy your stay.

Yesterday, we reported the devastating news that Disney, the new parent company of LucasFilm, would be shutting down LucasArts, the video game division of the company. With it, nearly 150 employees would lose their jobs, and production on titles such as Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault would stop.

Following the breaking news that cracked the internet in two, there were various reports circulating around the web that Star Wars 1313 was not in fact dead, but could be ponied off as part of LucasArts’ new business model of licensing out properties.

This was neither confirmed or denied by LucasFilm spokesperson Miles Perkins, who spoke to BBC, saying production on Star Wars 1313 has been “halted.” This of course means the game is now in a purgatory state, one that puts it as neither dead nor alive.

There’s a slight chance Star Wars 1313 could be licensed out to an external developer down the line. But my understanding of the situation is that the licensing would mainly cover just the concept, characters and story. The game that’s been built to date would probably have to be scrapped in favor of starting from scratch. That seems like the most logical course of action for a third-party developer who’s picking up the property.

It must be said, however, that I’m not entirely sure about that. Maybe some developer out there would love to get the code of Star Wars 1313 and carry the torch to release, given Disney/LucasArts actually would allow that. We can all dream, right?

Either way, it’s a damn shame Star Wars 1313 is suffering this fate. The game blew our minds at E3 last year, so to see it become a whisper in the wind is a travesty. Hopefully this all gets sorted out and an interested buyer comes along to nab up the license to make sure Star Wars 1313 escapes the prison pit in the bowels of Coruscant it’s stuck in.

Update: More info about Star Wars 1313 is starting to surface following yesterday's news. According to a Kotaku source, Star Wars 1313 was a game about Boba Fett, which many actually predicted after seeing the game for the first time at E3 last year. If you want to read up on the full story and see some concept art, head over to Kotaku via the link above.
