UFC Stockholm 2013: Pearson v Couture

For Ryan Couture, it’ll always be tough for him to make a name for himself.  Of course, Ryan’s father is Randy Couture, the legendary UFC Hall of Fame fighter who was a three-time Heavyweight Champion, two-time Light Heavyweight Champion and an actor-extraordinaire thanks to The Expendables movie franchise.

Ryan, 30, made his UFC debut Saturday, but unlike his father, the protégé lost the first fight of his big league career – in tough fashion.

After struggling during the opening round of the lightweight match, Couture’s opponent Ross Pearson brought the punches during the UFC on Fuel TV 9 event.  After landing several punches to the face, Pearson connected with a strong left hook to Couture’s head, sending him to the mat, at which point he was mauled until the match was called.

Couture didn’t exactly perform as badly as the TKO might indicate and had plenty to be happy about after a first round where he had a takedown and also landed 20 out of the 20 strikes attempted.  The loss snapped a four-fight win streak for Couture and dropped his overall MMA record to 6-2. You can see footage of the fight here from FOX.

With the fight, the Couture’s become the first father-son duo to compete in the octagon for the world’s leading mixed-martial arts promoter.
