Lock It In: Joe Ingles Will Become A Household NBA Name

Ingles doesn't have to be a bench warmer like Olympic star Patty Mills

Unlike London Olympic Boomer stars Patty Mills and Aron Baynes, Joe Ingles will become a household name when he arrives on the NBA scene next season.

Ingles isn’t Australia’s next basketball talent ready to take the world by storm, but he’s a veteran of Europe’s top competitions and the NBA is crying out for him.

The 203cm wing player told the Herald Sun this week that a long awaited NBA opportunity looms in the very near future and it is in part due to his starring role for Barcelona this season.

"The opportunity to play a bit more and show people I can play at this level and contribute is good," Ingles said ahead of Friday night’s Euroleague semi-final against Real Madrid. "But I haven't been thinking about (his future) too much.

While his stats don’t possess the wow factor commonly associated with players headed to the NBA, injuries have seen Joe Ingles thrust into a big role for Barcelona Regal this season as the team hunts for another Euroleague title.

"There's some NBA teams that have shown a lot of interest," Ingles said.

"That's definitely the goal after this year, to get over there, and I'm going to have a fair crack at it either way.

"If I can get a contract or if it's going to training camps or whatever it is, I'm going to take a shot at it. I'm 25, turning 26, and the window is closing, not too fast but it is closing I'm coming off a pretty consistent three years at one of the best teams in Europe."

Ingles made some serious NBA waves at last year’s London Olympics where he made ESPN’s All-Olympic second team along with Boomers teammate Patty Mills, but unlike Mills, a reserve for the San Antonio Spurs, Ingles has the chance to make a notable impact among some of the world’s top athletes.

The Happy Valley native (South Australia) is a seasoned performer and could slide into a heavy minute role for a number of team’s right away.

The Minnesota Timberwolves is one such team that jumps out as a perfecting landing spot for Ingles. Injuries to the team’s wing talent proved to be one of the factors that destroyed a potential filled season for the Timberwolves and Ingles multifaceted game will mean a prized role awaits him if he makes a roster this American summer.

Ingles could have headed to the States after the Olympics last year, but instead chose to honour the final year of his Barcelona contract.
