Electronic Arts (EA) announced this week they will no longer offer online passes for their games. The news, carried by Crave's Xbox360Achievements.org, was applauded by many gamers, who resented what they saw as a money grab by game makers to combat used game sales.
In fact, EA was one of the first game publishers to introduce the idea of an online pass, a move that was immediately adopted by many other companies as a way to ensure gamers bought their copies new instead of second hand through outlets such as GameStop.
EA said they dumped online passes in response to gamer feedback. We'll have to wait and see whether EA starts doing push notifications for in-game microtransactions.
