David Beckham walked off the pitch in Paris Saturday to chants, cheers and tears as one of the most iconic stars in the game ended his soccer career as a midfielder substitute for Paris Saint-Germain.

Saturday, Crave's NESN reported, Beckham started and captained the team in a match against Brest. His teammates all hugged him when his number was called for the final time as the fans, among them French President Nicolas Sarkozy, rose in applause — a fitting end for Beckham's 20-year career.

Beckham told reporters he had to work to keep his emotions in check for the entire second half.
