Fred Topel's second opinion showcases indie gems, horror highlights and the best-worst film of the year.

Perhaps the quality of this year’s movies can be best illustrated by the films I’ve left off this list. Gravity, Her, Don Jon, Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club were all great but this year I was mostly moved by film festival fare, and a few very special blockbusters. Heck, four of those honorable mentions premiered at festivals as well. I went long with a list of 12, but I also had a little fun with a few entries, so in case those don’t go over well, you’ll still end up with 10 real 2013 movies.
