NFL Draft Recap
NFL Draft Recap
Winners and Losers of the 2009 Draft
by James LeBeau
Apr 30, 2009

Listen, I understand that we are only a few days removed from the NFL draft and we have no real feasible way to determine the worth of any team’s selections…but that doesn’t mean we can’t try!

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some teams that fared well in the draft and others that, well, didn’t quite make the grade.

WINNERS

Cleveland Browns: Gotta hand it to the new regime in Cleveland, they made the most of that number five pick. With the top of the draft really lacking the huge talent of years past, they opted to trade down not once, but twice and still managed to snag the top rated center Alex Mack from Cal. I really like the wideout Brian Robiski pick as well. He’s a Wes Welker type of receiver, not afraid to go over the middle.

Detroit Lions: I still wish they would have landed Jay Cutler (a no brainer for them, in my opinion) but with that option gone, I think Matt Stafford is the next best thing. Sure, drafting a franchise quarterback is always an iffy prospect (see Ryan Leaf), but as the saying goes, no guts no glory. Having Calvin Johnson to throw to will help the learning curve a bit as well. The rest of the draft was iffy, but with so many holes to fill, you can’t cover every base.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Ok, I’m biased here, quite a bit since I bleed black and gold, but I think they really had a good draft. They added depth to the defense with the addition of Ziggy Hood, Keenan Lewis, and Joe Burnett, who should all make the team, and they got a bruiser in the fifth round with Frank Summers, a Jerome Bettis type player who will be key in short yardage situations…a desperate need for Pittsburgh.

Losers

Oakland Raiders: Yeah, I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon and ask what the heck was Al Davis thinking taking Darrius Heyward-Bay in the 7th round ahead of Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin? Bay may be run a 4.3 but he has bricks for hands. Davis may need to start spending draft weekend on vacation from now on.

Denver Broncos: It’s only fitting that these two rivals share my loser’s board. For the record, I’m not questioning the talent of the players Denver picked, it is the positions they went after. Primarily, my issue is with drafting Knowshon Moreno, a RB out of Georgia, in the first round. A draft pick made AFTER you went out and grabbed three free agent running backs…what the heck were they thinking? A team with a defense as porous as theirs and you draft for a position you have ample quality guys for…a real head scratcher here.
