Damon Double Steals as Yankees up 3-1
The New York Yankees used a wild 9th inning to secure a 7-4 win and a 3-1 World Series advantage over the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies. The inning was highlighted by a rare double steal by the Yankees Johnny Damon. Damon stole second, beating the throw by the catcher, and immediately noticed that no one was covering third. He then took off, easily outracing the opposition to the bag.
"I'm just glad that when I started running, I still had some of my young legs behind me," Damon said.
The highest paid player in baseball, Alex Rodriguez, continued his rewriting of his past October failings with a clutch two-out double in the ninth that scored the go ahead runs and sealed the victory.
"There's no question -- I've never had a bigger hit," Rodriguez said.
A Five Team Countdown to Perfection...
The NBA season is one week in and five teams have scraped and clawed their way to a perfect week. Those teams are the Boston Celtics (4-0), Miami Heat (3-0), Orlando Magic (3-0), Denver Nuggets (3-0) and Phoenix Suns (3-0). Preseason projected powerhouses Cleveland Cavaliers (2-2) and the Los Angeles Lakers (2-1) have shown some early rust as they are adjusting to the new pieces on their roster.
Just Like Old Times...
It was vintage Brett Favre in Lambeau Field Sunday as he tossed four touchdown passes in a 38-26 victory. The only difference was he was tossing them for the Minnesota Vikings and against his former team, the Green Bay Packers. Favre lit up the Packers secondary to a chorus of boo's from the stands from fans unforgiving of his team switch.
"Packer fans cheer for the Packers first," Favre said. "I know that. But I hope that everyone in the stadium watching tonight said, 'I sure hate those jokers on the other side, but he does play the way he's always played.' "
Favre's final stat line for his homecoming;17 of 28 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Not a bad days work.
Titans and Rams Record First W's!
At least for a day, the Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams were able to forget their disappointing starts and go home happy as each recorded their first victories of the season.
For Tennessee, it was a return to Vince Young that sparked the Titans to a 30-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Young was solid, tossing for 125 yds and a td on 83% passing and his efficiency opened up running back Chris Johnson for a huge 228 yds, 2 td game.
It was the play of Stephen Jackson that allowed the St. Louis Rams to run away with their first win over the Detroit Lions, a 17-10 victory. Jackson ran for an impressive 149 yards and a touchdown in the win.
BCS Shakeup...or Just Another Weekend in College Football!
Another week of college football equals another BCS poll and this weeks saw the Texas Longhorns leaping past idle Alabama to take the number two spot behind top ranked Florida. USC being blown out by Oregon tossed them out of the top ten (to 12) and allowed Cincinnati to jump up to number 5, right behind Iowa. TCU, Boise St., Oregon, LSU, and Georgia Tech round out the rest of the top ten.
