It was a tail of two players Sunday as both the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics won key game 4’s to even their respective series 2-2.
With superstar center Yao Ming out for the remainder of the playoffs, the Rockets got a boost from Aaron Brooks, who scored a career high 34 points in the 99-87 victory. For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant had an unusually unproductive day, scoring just 15 pts on 7 of 17 shooting.
In Boston, it was “Big Baby” Glenn Davis who was the hero with a last second 21-footer that gave the Celtics a 95-94 win over the Orlando Magic. The Magic lacked the aggressiveness they showed in game three and shot 27 three pointers, making just 5.
On Saturday, it was business as usual for the Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers as they both racked up wins, sending their opponents to the brink with commanding 3-0 leads.
The Cleveland Cavaliers received little help from the bench and most of the starters were cold all night but when there’s a LeBron, there’s a way, and that way was led by his 47 pts, 12 boards and 8 assists, as the Cavs coasted to a 97-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Newsflash, the best team in the West right now isn’t the Los Angeles Lakers, it’s the Denver Nuggets and thanks to a 106-105 win over the Dallas Mavericks Saturday night, they are just one win shy of taking a seat and watching the Rockets and Lakers slug it out for the chance to play them. If you believe everything you read, and that includes a statement from the league, then the game was decided by a no-call in the final seconds that allowed Carmelo Anthony to hit the game winning three. Personally, I watched the replay and if Antoine Wright was trying to intentionally foul Carmelo, then why did he throw his hands up in a clear “I didn’t touch him” gesture? If you have an intentional foul to give than give it right, wrap him up, don’t give a weak bump and expect the officials to call it in the closing seconds. Officiating has been so criticized recently (and rightly so) that I can understand why they didn’t make the call. You can only hear players, fans, and even Commissioner David Stern whine for so long about letting “players decide the game, not officials” before you swallow the whistle on anything but the most obvious fouls in the closing seconds.
The King Has Spoken
LeBron James recently did an interview with ESPN’s Outside the Line and had this interesting little tid-bit to say about his upcoming free-agency.
"I'm comfortable with being in Cleveland. I'm excited about it," James said. "I'm loving the direction we're in and I'm loving the teammates I have and the organization. So if that's any indication of me leaving, then somebody must be looking out the wrong box."
Remember, this is a man who has ‘Loyalty’ and ‘Family’ tattooed on his body so take any talk about his leaving as just that…talk.
