Around the League...
If the first two weeks are any indication as to what the season is going to be like, expect a roller coaster in the NFL. The New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings are all surprise unbeaten teams at 2-0 while last season powerhouses Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals are still looking for win number one. What's really crazy is that the Cincinnati Bengals are just one fluke play from being 2-0 after coming out of Lambeau field with a win and the New England Patriots are one away from being 0-2.
It's enough to make you thankful for the Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams, and Cleveland Browns. These three teams continue their march into obscurity with the same relentless losing and poor play that marked their 2008-09 campaigns. At least some part of the NFL is consistent!
News and Observations from Week 2...
The Gameball for Cincinnati's win over Green Bay Sunday has to go to Bengals Defensive End Antwan Odom who was all over Aaron Rogers all game long. He recorded 5 sacks, seven hits on the QB, and six tackles in the win.
Speaking of the Cincinnati game, did you catch the Packer fan who gave Bengals wideout Chad OchoCinco the finger when he did his 'Lambeau Leap' after scoring in the third quarter? Well, for those who missed it the first time, CBS was kind enough to replay it, without blurring, before the commercial break. The fan forced the network to use a shoddy camera angle for any other replay of the leap. The power of a finger indeed!
What a difference a year makes! The San Francisco 49ers have went from a team that was pushed around last season to a powerful, solid, 2-0 team practically overnight. A big chunk of the thanks has to go to RB Frank Gore, who put up 207 yards on just 17 carries Sunday. Efforts like that will get you a win almost every day.
What is up with the Tennessee Titans? The team with the best record in the NFL a season ago, the Titans just appear lost so far this year. They lost a tight one to the Pittsburgh Steelers in week one and came back to give up 34 and the game to the Houston Texans. Yes, it's early, but wins are tough enough to get in this league without losing games you really should win.
It would appear that the 'bright new day' for Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys after the departure of Terrell Owens isn't quite as bright as they hoped after the New York Giants spoiled their home opener in their new stadium Sunday night. Romo looked downright miserable, hitting on only 13 of 29 passes for 127 yds. And the one touchdown to three interceptions is gonna get u beat any game.
On the flip side to the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys game, Giants QB Eli Manning showed that their can be life without wideout Plaxico Burress. Manning was 25 of 38 for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns. He hit Mario Manningham and Steve Smith both 10 times for over 100 yds in the win.
