Heading into week 17 of the NFL season, there were still a number of questions concerning exactly which teams would make it to the playoffs and exactly where teams would be sitting when the playoffs began. Now, with Sunday behind up, I am happy to say that everything has sorted themselves out and you may now go on with your regularly scheduled daily activities…that is, after you take a minute to see how everything sorted out.
There wasn’t a ton of drama in the AFC this Sunday as the majority of the teams had already secured their spot. Two of the main spots up for grab was the AFC South crown, which was grabbed by Indianapolis despite looking less than sharp against the Tennessee Titans. With their win over Tennessee and Kansas City’s implosion against Oakland, the Colts managed to squeak out the number 3 seed.
Over in the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers controlled their own destiny in a classic ‘win and you clinch’ scenario in their game against the Cleveland Browns. With a win over the Browns, which they did in dominating fashion, the Steelers clinched the AFC North and the coveted number 2 seed which comes with a shiny week off next Sunday. They also relegated the Baltimore Ravens to a 12 win wild card team and a trip to Kansas City next weekend.
Here is your AFC playoff teams and your match-ups for next week.
#1 New England Patriots, #2 Pittsburgh Steelers, #3 Indianapolis Colts, #4 Kansas City Chiefs, #5 Baltimore Ravens, #6 New York Jets.
WildCard Weekend will feature the # 6 Jets vs. the #3 Colts and the #5 Ravens vs. the #4 Chiefs. We will take a closer look at these games, and the NFC’s, later this week.
The NFC had the greatest drama entering this weekend with playoff seeding’s from the top down up for grabs, minus #3 which was secured by the Eagles. The Atlanta Falcons managed an easy win over the Carolina Panthers to secure the #1 seed and the NFC South to lock out the New Orleans Saints from both, dropping them to the top Wild Card spot. The Green Bay Packers took care of business against division rival Chicago to earn the #6 seed, locking out the New York Giants and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the playoffs.
Unfortunately, especially to the 10-6 Giants and Bucs, the NFC West had to have a winner and a playoff representative and that ‘honor’ fell to the lowly Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks secured the division and the #4 seed with a win over the visiting St. Louis Rams. They will be hosting a playoff game next weekend despite fielding only a 7-9 record, which accounts to a tragedy in my book and may lead to some playoff seeding changes in the off season.
Here is your NFC playoff teams and your match-ups for next week.
