Sports Diva Update: 8/20

The latest from our two favorite sports divas.

It's been a quiet couple of weeks on the sports diva front but our favorite two, LeBron James and Brett Favre, have grabbed headlines in the past 48 hours yet again. Let's start with the nations favorite summer topic, LeBron James, who recently gave an interview with GQ magazine that was both very predictable and very informative in regards to the troubled psyche on this talented yet overly indulged athlete.

James openly talked about “the Decision” and showed no regret for leaving Cleveland or how he did it. In fact, he took it even a step farther and tried to explain it away by admitting a long standing hatred of the city.

"It's not far, but it is far," James told GQ. "And Clevelanders, because they were the bigger-city kids when we were growing up, looked down on us. ... So we didn't actually like Cleveland. We hated Cleveland growing up. There's a lot of people in Cleveland we still hate to this day."

James also took questions on the infamous Dan Gilbert letter that painted him in a very negative light, saying that it gives him "a lot of motivation" for when he plays his former squad. Also, in true diva fashion, he even referred to himself in third person when talking about Dan Gilbert.

"I don't think he ever cared about LeBron.” LeBron said “My mother always told me: 'You will see the light of people when they hit adversity. You'll get a good sense of their character.' Me and my family have seen the character of that man."

The kicker of this interview for me is that while he did praise Cavaliers fans for their support and dedication, he stuck by his post playoff comments that they were “spoiled” by his play.

"I love our fans. Cleveland fans are awesome," he told GQ. "But I mean, even my family gets spoiled at times watching me doing things that I do, on and off the court."

If that isn't a deluded sports diva quote, then I don't know what is.

Meanwhile, over in the NFL, it looks like the king of diva-hood himself, Brett Favre, will be returning to the Minnesota Vikings for one more shot at another SuperBowl. The 40-year old grandaddy of the NFL returned to Minnesota Tuesday via a private jet presumably to join his team. He was accompanied by three teammates; Steve Hutchinson,  Jared Allen and Ryan Longwell. The three were sent to Hattiesburg, Miss. With the mission to bring back Favre at all costs and it appeared that they were successful.

"We simply went down there to get an answer and after talking for a while, his answer was 'yes,'" Longwell said in the message. "He loves the guys in the locker room and is doing it for all of us."

As of the time of this article, there has yet to be any official word on Favre's return but between player reaction and Favre's own website which posted "stay tuned for breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings today on Brett Favre's possible return.", it seems pretty evident that he is returning for one more shot.

And it may have come down to the unlikely visit from three players.

"He didn't know we were coming," Longwell said in another text message to ESPN. "We just asked if he had one more year. Not about wins or losses, but just for the guys in the locker room to have a blast for a year."
