With football season now officially ended, it's time to set our sights fully on the NBA and for the NBA, it's that time again. Yep, that's right, it's All-Star time and to get you prepped for the weekend of stars we are going to look back at some of the great highlights of this hallowed occasion.
1986 Slam Dunk Contest
In a true David vs Goliath match-up, the finals of this dunk contest saw diminutive 5'7” Spud Webb facing off against teammate, 6' 8” Dominique Wilkins. In what as supposed to be a rematch between Wilkins and Michael Jordan, whom he beat in the finals the previous year but was injured for this one, ended up being the Webb show as he put up a perfect 150 to beat the reigning champ.
1991 Three-Point Contest
It was the semi-final round of the '91 NBA Three-point contest and Chicago Bulls sharpshooter Craig Hodges was up. The 3x winner of this event calmly began hoisting threes, making shot after shot. The record for the event coming into this for consecutive shots was 11 by Larry Bird but Hodges almost doubled this as he reigned down 19 straight shots.
1993 All-Star Game
We all know that love him or hate him and as a Cavs fan, you know where my vote lies, Michael Jordan was the Man. In the '93 All-Star game, the man showed up big time, putting up 30 points in the contest. But in the end, it as the dynamic duo of John Stockton and Karl Malone who took over the game in overtime and took home the MVP.
2001 NBA All-Star Game
Who says that competition goes out the window in All-Star Games? Don't tell that to Allen Iverson who rallied his Eastern Conference squad from 20 down in the 4th to beat the heavily stacked and heavily favored Western Conference squad. The Final score, 111-110, East.
2002 NBA All-Star Game
In a game that readily showcases individual talent and plays, no play stands out more than the one Tracy McGrady made in the '02 All-Star Game. Basically, he lobbed the ball up from the left side and crossing over to the right before grabbing the ball off the backboard and slamming it home. We've seen other players do this type of move since but nobody did it as well as McGrady.
