Top Stories 11-17

The top stories in sports.

Hey guys, welcome back to Top Stories. Today we’re traveling to Buffalo, South Bend, and Cincinnati so get your boarding pass and find your seat. Anybody complains and I’ll turn this plane right around!

That’s it, you’re Fired!!

Dick Jauron lost his job after another terrible start for the Buffalo Bills, a team that hasn’t seen success since Marv Levy patrolled the sidelines. I look at it this way, TO is actually a nice addition to the team in his first season, and still the Bills couldn’t get it done. Their offense was anemic and they  live in one of the toughest divisions in football, all of which make a perfect storm that has swept the Bills season away.

Jauron wasn’t the problem, it was the imbalanced personnel and the so-so quarterback who didn’t have enough time to throw. This is how I look at it from an outsiders perspective, the coach comes relatively cheap compared to the price of a star player. So it’s simply cost effective to fire the cheapest piece to the puzzle instead of risking losing a huge investment.

That’s what I think of when I hear a player or manager say that their sport is a business, that each member of the team is an expendable commodity that can easily be discarded. Dick Jauron was just another casualty of the process.

And the theme continues…

Charlie Weis is apparently also on the hotseat for a less than impeccable start for Notre Dame football this year. Maybe it’s just me but what is the deal with Notre Dame and most of the schools in college football. They have nearly impossible expectations and a level of involvement that should require a doctors intervention.

Notre Dame has to compete for recruits nationwide on a playing field that is vastly different than even 20 years ago. There are big conferences and more schools with just as much to offer an athlete as Notre Dame. With the recruiting situation the way it is, Notre Dame fans should be lucky that they have the success they have.

Notre Dame is a fading power house that is going the way of Rutgers, the birthplace of college football. Just because you’ve been around a long time doesn’t mean your automatically relevant. None of this is Charlie Weiss’ fault, and the only chance you have to recruit any kind of talent is show him the utmost support.

On the bright side, no wait…

It seems that we can’t seem to go down the middle of the road on anything anymore. The Bengals get off to an admittedly fantastic start and now they want to anoint Marvin Lewis as the coach of the year. There is a guy in Indy that hasn’t lost a game that might disagree. Taking nothing away from Lewis, I just think that its unfair to the game to start crowning people this and that by the midway point.

Josh McDaniel doesn’t go on a three game skid and we’re probably giving him the award at this time. The season isn’t over yet and the Bengals haven’t played all their games so just hang on and save the bubbly for when the game is actually over.
