The woeful New York Mets just can't catch a break! Heading into the ninth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets were down 9-6. They opened up the inning scoring one run and getting runners on first and second with no outs and looked to be mounting a much needed comeback when Jeff Francoeur came up to bat.
Francoeur hit a hard line drive up the middle that looked to be going to center field as both runners were going on a called double steal. But, out of nowhere, Phillies second baseman Eric Bruntlett snagged the ball out of the air at the second base bag, tagged it and tagged the runner stealing second to complete the first unassisted triple play to end the game since 1927. The ending was so shockingly sudden that it took both teams a few moments to register it.
"I didn't know how to react. I didn't know what to do," Bruntlett said. "The ninth inning was wild. The whole game it seemed was strange."
Chicks Dig the Long Ball...
Move over Tiger Woods, heck, move over the entire group of male golfers, as the US women carried the day for the third straight year, beating Europe to win it's third straight Solheim Cup. What was a close contest with Europe leading six of the twelve matches halfway through the final day quickly turned into a rout as the Americans turned it up a notch, dominating the final holes to cruise to victory.
The Americans were led by Michelle Wie, who went 3-0-1 for the week and the heart of the team, Juli Inkster, who at 49, is the oldest player in Solheim Cup history. It was Inkster's point, that she earned on a hard fought comeback, that secured the win for the Americans.
"Beth told us not to look at the board, but I have to look at the board and it was not looking good," Inkster said. "I just kept chattering to myself to say, 'This is an important match, you've got to get at least a half a point here. It's two holes. If you can't win two holes, then you don't deserve to be out here.'"
Same old Detroit...
The Cleveland Browns, behind starting quarterback Derek Anderson, showed some signs of life in a 27-10 preseason win over the lowly Detroit Lions. Anderson passed for 130 yards and looked at ease leading the O. On the flip side, Lions number one pick, Matt Stafford, had a rough night. He threw an interception on his first pass and missed a few key throws. Overall, Stafford went 5-13.
The Traitor on Display..
In his debut with Minnesota Friday night, Brett Favre looked less than impressive while displaced starter Tavaris Jackson posted a perfect passer rating of 158.3 on 12 of 15 passing for 202 yards and 2 tds in the Vikings 17-13 preseason win over the Chiefs. Favre is expected to play the entire first half in Minnesota's next preseason game.
