The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are getting closer, which means you should know more about iconic Canadian athletes that were successful at previous Winter Games. So here are the Top 10 Canadian Winter Olympians.
With two gold and a silver in cross-country skiing, Beckie Scott made headlines when she became the first North American woman to win a medal in the event. She currently sits on the International Olympic Committee.
Sandra Schmirler was a legendary curler, skipping her team to gold at the ’98 Winter Olympics in Nagano, the first year the sport was a part of the Games. She died two years later of cancer at the age of 36.
Myriam Bedard made history when she won bronze at the 1992 Winter Games in biathlon, the first year women were allowed to compete in the event. She followed that up with two gold a couple of years later.
Clara Hughes has not only been successful at the Winter Olympics, but she’s among an elite group of Canadian athletes who have also won medals in the Summer Olympics (she’s got a gold, silver and bronze in long track speed skating and two bronze in cycling).
