Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress got some interesting news today as his court case has been adjourned until June. Apparently a plea deal is hard to come by because neither side will budge on the penalties doled out in the deal. Burress is charged with criminal possession of a firearm in the second degree, which carries a minimum sentence of 3 and a half years.
Speaking of prison and legal battles Mike Vick is getting out of trouble a little bit at a time. The former Falcons QB is working on a release from the team by settling a breach of contract grievance that the team filed against him when he was convicted in a dog fighting scandal in 2007. Vick will be asked to pay either a maximum of 7.5 million or a minimum of 6.5 million depending on the appeals court ruling.
Gary Sheffield has found himself one homerun shy of 500. That would be pretty good news if he hadn’t been released from his team before the start of the season. Having been plagued by injuries the last couple of seasons in Detroit, Sheffield has been hitting well below his career average. At forty years of age it is unclear where he’ll play next at this point.
It’s rare but it looks like Chipper Jones will spend his entire career with one team. The Atlanta Braves have given Jones a three year extension through 2012 worth a reported 42 million dollars. Chipper Jones is the only switch hitter with at least 300 homeruns and a .300 career batting average.
Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels will miss his opening day start because of problems with his elbow. The defending World Champions will likely not have their ace until April 10th.
If you thought that the Phillies where in trouble without their ace, have a look at the Anaheim Angels. They are out three pitchers, John Lackey, Ervin Santana, and Kelvim Escobar are all sidelined with injury.
The Boston Celtics are still plagued by at least one injury. Kevin Garnett will miss at least the next four games with a strained knee and may not return until there are just three games remaining in the regular season. The Celtics are fighting for the second seed in the playoffs with the Orlando Magic in the eastern conference.
The Miami Heat retired their first jersey as a pro basketball organization last night. The number they retired belonged to none other than Alonzo Mourning. The team has been around for 21 years, and the Heat made the night extra special with a letter from the President, and speeches by luminaries from Mourning’s career like John Thompson and Patrick Ewing.
