Tailgating 1/27

News and notes from the week in sports.
Hey guys and welcome back to Tailgating, our kinda weekly look at the world of sports! This week is Super Bowl week; hope you have a great day this weekend and that you enjoy your game in the safest way possible. With that out of the way, let’s get to the sports!
People talk about the ‘Steroid era’ as if it were over somehow, but with new allegations seemingly every week, the Steroid Era is still upon us. This time around it was former Mets employee Kirk Radomski making allegations against Doc Gooden and David Justice. Both have denied the claims, with Justice going as far as saying that he never even met Radomski much less bought HGH from him.
‘A-Fraud’ really? That’s the name Yankee players and personnel had for the slugger behind his back according to an excerpt from former Yankee skipper Joe Torre’s upcoming book The Yankee Years. Alex Rodriguez is reported by ESPN to be unfazed by the comments in the book because the two were never very close.
After a week of going back and forth in the media, Chargers GM A.J. Smith had a ten minute phone call with star running back LaDainian Tomlinson. There were rumors that the star back would end up on the trading block or have to take a pay cut in order to stay on the team. Tomlinson made it very clear on his website that he wanted to remain a Charger, and it looks like the GM responded with a positive exchange between the two. There is no confirmation on LT’s future with the team, but the rough spot seems to have passed.
Even though it cost him a bit of a pay cut Andy Pettitte is a New York Yankee once again. The hurler has been signed to a one year deal worth about 5.5 million with special bonuses should he stay off the disabled list and pitches 210 innings. Pettitte expressed a strong desire to pitch in the new Yankee’s stadium.
Jason Varitek is in the same boat as Andy Pettitte in a lot of ways, facing down a one year deal as the best he can do to stay with the team he loves, the Boston Red Sox. The Sox offered Varitek a one year deal worth 5 million after Varitek turned out salary arbitration in hopes of getting g a multiyear deal. The Sox are hesitant after Varitek came off his worse offensive season in the big leagues.
Could Stephon Marbury be a Celtic? Not really according to a source close to the situation. That’s coming from the Boston Herald, who say they have a source close to the situation that says that Marbury hasn’t been guaranteed anything despite what the New York Knicks guard has to say. While it’s true the two sides have had discussions, nothing concrete has been set. The source also says that his playing time would be limited if at all.
Despite a sprained right knee it looks like Hines Ward will be playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers anyway. The wide receiver will likely not practice until Thursday and has been keeping pressure off the knee as much as possible. How much of a factor he will be in the game remains to be seen, but he will play.
It had to happen eventually. T.O. is getting his own reality series to premier on VH1 this summer. The show is about Terrell Owens and his life off the field. His two friends and publicists will also be featured on the show as they play match maker and therapists for Owens. That’s right folks, get ready for one more VH1 train wreck.
