NFL Special
As followers of T.G.I.M. know, I usually like to take a look at the big events of the weekend in every sport but with the NFL season winding down, I’m going to dedicate this week’s edition to football and football only. Consider it my Monday tribute to the greatest sport in the land (In my humble opinion) and a preview of a preview of the upcoming Feb. 1st game in Tampa.
Congratulations are in order…

Mark it down, chalk it up, punch your tickets, and don’t let the singing fat lady in the other locker rooms distract you as you swill champagne and don new hats…The Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers are heading to Tampa.

Is there any two teams more fitting to represent the NFL than these two? Are there any two teams that better represent what will no doubt go down as one of the oddest seasons in recent NFL history, perhaps even all time?

Let’s take a look at a few of the events that shaped this memorable season:

In the season opener, arguably the best quarterback on the best team in the NFL (Tom Brady of the Patriots), is lost for the season, opening the door for…

The Miami Dolphins won the AFC East with a ten game turnaround behind the steady play of the two-time NFL Comeback player of the year QB Chad Pennington, who was released by the New York Jets in favor of…

Brett Favre, the legend out of Green Bay, after a familiar off-season of “I’m retiring…OH WAIT, just kidding”, is shunned by the Pack and is traded to the Jets. He plays well most of the season but injuries and age cause Brett and the Jets to lose four out the final five, costing them the division and the playoffs. Speaking of losing…

The Detroit Lions upped the bar for ineptitude by being the first team in NFL History to go 0-16. Since we’re on the topic of bad teams, this year’s playoffs featured two teams that had everyone clamoring for a better playoff system. The first of these two was…

The San Diego Chargers, at 8-8, won the AFC West after starting the season 4-8 and being behind the Denver Broncos 3 games with three games to go. This ‘horrible’ playoff team went on to beat the high-powered Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the playoffs before falling in the divisional round to…

The Pittsburgh Steelers went 12-4 with one of the hardest schedules in NFL history behind the steady play of ‘Big Ben’ Roethlisberger and the number one defense in the land. That D will be tested against the high flying offense of…

The Arizona Cardinals, who were considered the worst team to make the playoffs, only beat the Falcons, the Panthers (in Carolina, where they were 8-0) and the Eagles (who beat the Giants and stomped ‘Zona earlier in the season) on their way to…

SuperBowl XLIII.

Look, you’re going to see this game dissected in every way imaginable by everyone and their mothers, cousins, aunts and uncles in the coming two weeks (including moi who will be running a complete breakdown of this game next week, be sure to check it out!) but before we look that far forward, let’s take a second and congratulate both the Cardinals and the Steelers for overcoming the nay-sayers, the injuries, and demanding schedules and giving us a matchup no-one thought possible.

So rest, heal, and enjoy the spotlight guys…I’ll see you soon.
