Tailgating 12-2

News and notes from the week in sports.
Tailgating is Crave Online’s weekly celebration of all things sports. Every week we’ll bring you news and notes from the week that was in the world of sports. All of this brought to you in the way you love it, Crave Online style!
We have all heard of this by now but just in case you haven’t, Plaxico Burress is a moron. The embattled New York Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the leg when the hand gun he was carrying in his waistband slipped out of place and went sliding down his leg. The idiot went to retrieve the gun when it went off. Burress was arraigned on charges and released on bail. He then reported to the Giants facility on Tuesday where he received treatment for the injury. His teammate Antonio Pierce might also be in hot water after he allegedly stashed the gun. The mayor of New York was plenty pissed and wants the courts to throw the book at Burress.
So Stephon Marbury’s situation has spiraled into utter oblivion. The star guard has been ordered not to participate in anything the Knicks are doing until they can find a way to be rid of him and his contract. That means he can’t practice with the team and certainly can’t play. Apparently Marbury was dissatisfied with the buyout offer put forth by Donnie Walsh and the Knicks. It must have been some serious BS considering the talks only lasted for about 15 minutes.
The USC Trojans had better win their game against the UCLA Bruins this weekend or they’re gonna feel pretty dumb in their nice red home uniforms. The Trojans lead by head coach Pete Carroll have decided to wear their home jersey’s against their cross town rivals despite being the road team. This go back to a tradition of both teams wearing their home jerseys that last happened in 1982. The NCAA will penalize the Trojans two timeouts (one in each half) for wearing their red jerseys.
Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones is scheduled to return to active duty for the Dallas Cowboys. Jones has had trouble staying out of well, trouble since joining the team and hasn’t played a game since October 12. Coach Wade Phillips whose job might be riding on how well his team does this year says that Jones will return punts and play in defensive sub packages.
As if things couldn’t be worse for the Cleveland Browns. The team is already having an issue at the quarterback position, now that issue has been solved in the worst way possible. QB Derek Anderson suffered from a torn ligament in his left knee that will sideline him for the rest of the season. That means that it all falls on the shoulders of third stringer Ken Dorsey. Too bad his star Tight End is also out with a high ankle sprain. Man, the hits just keep on coming.
A good number of NFL players including Deuce McAllister, Will Smith, and Charles Grant all tested positive for a diuretic called Bumetanide. This substance is used to mask the presence of other performance enhancing drugs. The group of players was suspended but are waiting on the results of an appeal to the league to see if the suspensions will be served. The players state that the banned substance was not listed as an ingredient in an over the counter weight loss pill.
The Dodgers, and the Milwaukee Brewers have offered a collection of star players salary arbitration this past Monday. CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets, and Manny Ramirez are amongst the group of players to be offered the arbitration. If the players still decide to go elsewhere the teams in question will get drafts picks depending on what type of free agent leaves the organization.
The Dodgers apparently have no interest in resigning Rafael Furcal. The free agent is being courted by at least two other teams the Oakland A’s and the Dodgers rivals the San Francisco Giants. The Atlanta Braves have also expressed interest but a number of trades would have to take place in order for them to acquire Furcal.
