But on the brighter side of things, this also brings us closer to the best football to be seen on TV…snow games! There’s nothing more entertaining for me than watching a NFL game on a Sunday that you can hardly see through the blizzard like conditions. It doesn’t matter who’s playing, just that snow is falling and the players are sliding around. It’s carnage with cleats. It’s mayhem with hand warmers. It’s the game broken down to its most basic, essential element, physicality. No flashy passing games, check your double moves at the door…just man vs. man, 3 yards and a cloud of snow. So, when you’re stressing over stuffing the turkey or waiting for the fat man to wiggle his way down the chimney, take a second to check out the weekend football games. Because nothing gets you over the holiday blues like watching grown men running the pigskin in a foot of snow.
All Hail the King…
In the span of 72 hours, the King of the NBA, LeBron James, put up 82 points, 10 assts, 22 rebounds and 4 steals against the Chicago Bulls. As an added bonus, he went 4-9 from beyond the arc, hitting key shots down the stretch. Oh, and for those of you knocking the Kings free throw ability, he went 26 out of 29 in those games and 46-55 in the past 5 games. The wins over Chicago put the Cavs at 5-2 in the early going and they will be riding a 4 game win streak into their home game against Milwaukee Tuesday. It’s good to be the King!
Wow…Just Wow…
The term “statement game” is one of those terms that are thrown around almost daily in every sport, usually without much thought or import, but what I saw out of number 2 ranked Texas Tech this weekend was truly one of those moments. Yeah, I was one of those that thought that last weeks huge win over then number 1 Texas was an emotion-fueled fluke but to follow it up with such a dominating performance against a solid Oklahoma State team has opened my eyes. I’m now officially on the Red Raider bandwagon and am backing TT Quarterback Graham Harrell for the Heisman. His 40-50, 456 yds, 6 td performance this past Saturday was simply one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen on any stage. I still stand by what I said last Monday about them leapfrogging then idle Penn State (who laid an egg against Iowa this weekend, making my complaint somewhat non-relevant) but they’ve more than earned their #2 spot.
And the Winner for Worst Team in the NFL goes to…
The St. Louis Rams are officially the worst team in the NFL this season at 2-7…and I say that with the utmost respect to Cincinnati (1-8), Oakland (2-7), Kansas City (1-8), and my personal favorite losing team, the Detroit Lions (0-9). Unlike the other teams mentioned, the Rams have shown absolutely nothing in the majority of the season played and what wins they have seem almost accidental. I would have to say that they reached a new low in their 47-3 loss to the J…E…T…S (Jets, Jets, Jets!) when, by HALFTIME, they were down 40-0. This is a sad turn around for a team that once was the highlight of the NFL. “The Greatest Show on Turf” should simply be changed to “ugh”.
The Answer to All Your Problems…Not So Fast!
Look, I get it that Detroit felt it needed a shake-up to get itself over those hasty postseason exits they’ve had recently but you have to wonder if it was the smartest thing in the world to trade for Allen Iverson. A team like the Pistons thrive on one thing, chemistry (or team unity, if you like that one better,) and AI has never really been the best team player. He’s as quick to shoot his mouth as he is the ball (practice, you talking about practice!) and his skills are clearly on the decline. I know it’s early but Detroit was 4-0 without him and 0-2 with him…this may be more than just an adjustment period. As a Cavs fan, I love this trade for the feeling that it basically hamstrings the Pistons and gives the Central to my boys. I don’t see the Pistons being the power they have been in recent years but hey, I could be proven wrong. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.
