Torres Dropped For Chelsea’s Champions League Opener?

After moving from Liverpool, Torres has been less than spectacular.

Since his record breaking £50million transfer from Liverpool this January Fernando Torres has failed to live up to those lofty expectations during his tenure at Chelsea, having scored just one goal for the Blues this season.

After starting last Saturday’s game against Sunderland on the bench, this week may see Torres’ place in the starting line-up brought into further question as club boss Andre Villas-Boas hinted towards the striker yet again being replaced by young hopeful Daniel Sturridge, who may have cemented his place in the starting 11 after a goal at the start of his campaign in Sunderland granted Chelsea a 1-2 win.

"We had a lot of teams calling Daniel to take him on loan during the transfer window but it was never going to happen. The technical staff and I all had the feeling we should bring him in. We have an outstanding player" Villa-Boas said. "It is a very important week ahead for us and we really need to focus now on the next game which is of the utmost importance.

"Everybody wants to start well in the Champions League with three points — especially in a home game — and even more so because it comes before Manchester United. It is a vital week for us but we have a very good squad in all sectors and we will have to rest a few of the players in order to be able to respond.

"The Champions League requires a certain level, but at least we have a good four days before the Manchester United game.

“There is competition for all the main forward positions and it's important we have that."

If Torres fails to make it into the starting line-up it will be another blow for the Spaniard, who hasn’t scored for the Blues since their 3-0 victory against West Ham in April. Villa-Boas spoke to the Daily Mirror recently regarding the striker’s questionable goal drought, saying that "he didn't lose his talent because he's played 21 games and only scored one goal. The talent is there and the question is regaining confidence.” This week we shall see whether Villa-Boas has finally grown tired of waiting.
