Stosur Crushed In Qatar Open Final

World No.1 Victoria Azarenka claims an empathetic victory against Australia's best

Sam Stosur's great week came to an end at the hands of World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Qatar Open.

Stosur crumbled on the big stage, going down 6-1 6-2. It was Azarenka’s 17th consecutive victory in 2012 and she remains undefeated against Australia’s best female tennis player with a 6-0 overall record.

Azarekna showed no signs of the injury she suffered on Saturday when she twisted her ankle in a semi-final win over Agnieszka Radwanska.

She was able to break Stosur’s serve twice in the first set and took a 4-1 lead and then claimed the opening three games of the second before sailing to the title, the 11th of her career.

Azarenka’s plan to keep the rallies short due to the windy conditions and her ankle worries worked brilliantly and she was able to effectively nullify Stosur’s strong serve.

The World No.1 is having a fantastic year, capped by her recent Australian Open win and will move on to play in next week’s Dubai Championship in Doha, an event she was eliminated from in the first round a year ago.

The loss had the star from Belarus considering leaving the game and she return home where she was counseled by her mother and grandmother. She then went on to finish 2011 with 55 wins from 72 matches and became the world’s number three ranked female player.

Famous for her loud in-game grunts, Azarenka labeled the people that have begun mimicking her since the Aussie Open as “weak people”. The WTA are looking at ways to lower player noise levels.
