Australian No.1s Each Win Openers In Miami

Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic have won their opening matches at the Miami Open.

The Song Ericsson Open is now underway in Miami and the ATP 1000 tournament features the very best talent in the men’s and women’s competition.

Australia’s top-two tennis players, Bernard Tomic and Sam Stosur, have both enjoyed early success thus far.

Stosur drew a bye in her opening round and was matched against Valeria Savinykh in her second round game, defeating the Russian easily in straight sets in just over an hour of playing time.

She took the first set 6-4 and cruised in the second, winning 6-0. Stosur advances to play South African Chanelle Scheepers in the third round.

No.2 seed Maria Sharapova and No.4 seed Caroline Wozniaki also advanced while Serena Williams played her first WTA tournament match since the Australian Open in January where she suffered an ankle injury. She defeated China’s Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-3.

Tomic is set for a tough second round matchup after getting past Sergiy Stakhovsky. Tomic managed a tough first set, winning 7-6 (7-4) but fared better in the second, 6-3.

Tomic faces a bleak second round matchup, drawing No.5 seed David Ferrer in the next round.

Unfortunately, Matthew Ebden’s recent spate of good form came to a crashing halt as he was defeated in his opener by American Sam Querrey 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.

Former World top-ten and Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis also cruised to a first round victory over Argentine Leonardo Mayer, 6-1 6-4. His second round matchup will be against World No.1 Novak Djokovic. Bad luck.
