Stosur And Rodionova To Charleston Third Round

Two Australians, one a star and the other an unknown, have enjoyed some early success in Charleston.

Australian tennis star Sam Stosur and little known compatriot Anastasia Rodionova have both advanced to the third round of the WTA tour’s Charleston tournament.

Stosur defeated American Jamie Hampton in straight sets, 6-0 7-5.

"I'm really looking forward to this part of the season. I hope I can have a good week here," Stosur said.

"Today I lost serve for the first time when I was serving for the match, but she played some good points.

"She probably felt she had nothing to lose and went for it more. But from 5-all I played two good games."

Rodionova notched a special win against Anabel Medina Garrigues, 7-5 6-3.

Medina Garrigues is the World No.27, the tournament’s 10th seed, and a clay court specialist. She has won 10 WTA titles. In comparison, the soon to be 30-year-old Rodionova is just the World No.98 and is yet to win a WTA title.

The Russian-born Australian will play the winner of Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams.

Venus Williams also moved past the second round by beating Iveta Benesova in straight sets. Williams returned to tennis for the first time last week, playing in the Miami tournament, since last year’s US Open when she was diagnosed with a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease. She lost to tournament winner Agnieszka Radwanska after a good run of four won matches.

Venus could play sister Serena in the semi-finals if the two continue their winning ways.
