Now that Dwight Howard has finally escaped from Orlando, more truths are coming out about how everything went down. It’s no secret that Stan Van Gundy and Howard butted heads or that Howard was a big reason Van Gundy got fired. Van Gundy recently did a radio interview where he spoke his peace.
Van Gundy led with the fact that Orlando management mishandled the entire situation. Wow, that’s some earth-shattering news. I think everyone in the free world can agree Orlando management is about as competent as the Lithuanian Olympic Basketball team. Van Gundy sees his critical mistake was telling the truth.
On March 15 when the team was returning from a road game against the San Antonio Spurs, Van Gundy told the press that Howard wanted out of Orlando. Of course, everything he said was true. Regardless of this fact, Dwight got sensitive that Van Gundy was the one that gave this information to the media and felt the Orlando management didn’t do enough to defend him.
Defend him from what? Dwight wanted out of Orlando and Van Gundy simply told the truth. What did Dwight want management to do? Send Van Gundy to bed without dinner?
First off, Van Gundy loves to eat, so good luck with that. Secondly, Van Gundy eventually got fired over his riff with Dwight, so it looks like Howard won that one. The bottom line is Stan is known for talking off the cuff. This is why the media love him. Unfortunately, his candor hurt his relationship with Dwight to the point that Howard was able to leverage that into Van Gundy’s termination.
Van Gundy went on to state that Orlando’s fear of losing the best center in the league caused them to hold the best center in the league too long. They still haven’t gotten over losing Shaq he claims. Management just froze. Unfortunately, just like they held Shaq too long, they held Howard too long and have little to show for it. Van Gundy predicts Orlando will drop to somewhere near the bottom of the East before they’ll be back near the top. Strong words for a man known to speak his mind.
